"Watchman, what is left of the night?
Watchman, what is left of the night?"
"Morning is coming, but also the night.
If you would ask, then ask;
and come back yet again."
Do we, like the actors in the poem [Isa 21:11-12 NIV] make a pretense to inquire of the Lord but fail to recognize the signs of the time and the warnings from God and continue on our way as if tomorrow will come and go, just like today?
The Bible reminds us time will not always be our buffer to protect us from the inevitable judgment. "Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, 'Peace and safety,' destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape." [1Th 5:1-3 NIV]
Don't believe you can save yourself by going to church and tipping your hat to God. The Bible warns against going to church to give an appearance of religion while continuing in your self-centered ways (Jer 7:1-11).
Don't believe you can save yourself by living a good life. We cannot save ourselves because our sin is too great -- even for the best of us. The Bible teaches us that God is holy and even the good things we do only amount to dirty rags (Isa 64:6). We will always come short of God's standard (Rom 3:23).
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sin. By His death and resurrection He provided the only way to life (Romans 3:9-26; John 3:16); and there is no other way to Heaven except through faith in Christ and what He did for us (John 14:6; Act 4:12). My friend, God's grace is amazing but how can we escape our deserved condemnation to Hell if we ignore this gift of salvation from God? (Hebrews 2:3)
Don't be deceived by the promise of time. Life will not always continue as it has in the past because time is destined to end. Today is the day to surrender your life and your will to Almighty God and to trust in the work of His Son, Jesus Christ, for your salvation.
Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. [Heb 3:15 NIV]
