Cominus.com :: Cominus Papers :: Gender Neutral Language

In the past, God overlooked mans' ignorance, but now He commands all
people everywhere to repent. For He has set a day when He will judge
the world with justice by the Man, Jesus Christ; the One He has appointed.
He has given proof of this to all men by raising Him from the dead.

Gender Neutral Language

Category: Biblical Worldview

In this modern politically correct environment, and with modern Christianity wanting to project an inclusive image and a sensitivity to emotional needs (whinings and tantrums), it is easy to go with the flow and change the rendering of our language to fit cultural demands. Most people never consider the history of their language and they are no longer taught the structure of a nations' language has everything to do with their view of God.

In our publications, the use of the pronouns "his," "him," etc. are not always gender specific but may apply equally to the male and/or female party. This use is traditional throughout the history of the English language and female pronouns have been and are always unacceptable for gender-neutral subjects. Therefore, we find it offensive to substitute or join the female gender for gender-neutral subjects ("he or she," etc.).

The Bible tells us God made man in His own image (Gen 1:27). We are the image of God and the Bible is specific that He is not a woman. In fact, it was God who coined the term "man" for gender-neutral subjects. "He created them male and female. . . and He called them 'man'." [Gen 5:2; NOTE for KJV: The word for "Adam" in this verse is not a proper noun but is a Hebrew word for "man."] God further demonstrated this principle when, talking to Moses, He referred to "a man or woman" as "he" (Num 5:5-7; 6:1-4).

Although our nation was founded upon the laws of the Scriptures, we have removed God from almost every arena of life. We find this attempt to substitute female pronouns for gender-neutral subjects, just one more way to remove God from our society. We will not compromise our faith nor our language to satisfy modern political attitudes.

God save our nation.

ROM 9:16-21 [NIV] :: It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I may display My power in you and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” Therefore, God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy and He hardens whom He wants to harden. ¶ One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who resists His will?” But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’” Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?
