On The Treatment of Homosexuals

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Recently, I was in a disagreement with several youth leaders who were promoting the DVD “Jesus, Save Us From Your Followers.” The premise of the DVD was Christians owed the homosexual community an apology for centuries of bigotry and judgment. The creators of the “documentary” established confession booths at homosexual events – not for the homosexual to enter and confess their sin, but for the Christian promoters to confess their sin of bigotry and hate to the homosexual who would enter.

A quick definition of hate: standing up for the truth of God’s word is “hate.”

I argued with these pastors and leaders from the Scripture. They, in turned, argued back that I was narrow-minded and old-school and that I could never understand their ways. To them, it did not matter the multiple Scriptures condemning the practice and the participants; it did not matter to them Jesus’ example of praising the prophets for their hateful ways (modern definition) rather than condemning them as narrow-minded; nor did it matter to them these homosexuals were on the road to hell and their method would do nothing to turn them back. And, in the end, I refused to “agree to disagree.”

It is hard for the church – and especially youth pastors – to stand up for the truth because they are more interested in what the church looks like than what the message of the Gospel is. This is ironic, because these are the same people who are supposed to address the problem of peer pressure to our youth, yet they cannot handle the problem themselves.

Molotov Mitchell has a short video out that addresses this issue: What should be the Christian response to the homosexual? [scroll down to "My Gay Friends" - depending on when you read this, it might be a ways down the list.]

A Belated Merry Christmas from Cominus

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We wish for you, in 2010, the greatest prosperity and blessings.

A WORD ABOUT YOUR PROSPERITY:

Over two thousand years ago, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to be born like one of us – to die for all of us. He paid the price for our sin. Our sin is in our nature and our nature is to reject God and His authority; and we cannot pay for that, not even with our own blood. But God, Himself, came to earth, became one of us. He willingly left His splendor in Heaven and suffered death at the hands of men – the hands of men He created, in order to bring us back to God. That is why Jesus said, He came to give us life more abundantly (John 10:10).

This is why birthday parties for Jesus really miss the point: Christmas is not a celebration of Jesus’ birthday. We are not celebrating another year older, nor are we celebrating the date of His birth. We are celebrating God’s greatest gift to man, the gift of Himself and His willing sacrifice – we are celebrating Christ’s triumph over sin and death, so we can live with Him forever; and He gives us freedom on earth, no matter our lot in life.

In the days of old, and Bible times included, it was common to celebrate with song, festivities and the giving of gifts whenever a people received a great victory, military or otherwise. So, too, in our giving of gifts to family and friends, we are celebrating the salvation and redemption God has given freely to man. This is why we give – not to fulfill some materialistic lust, though it appears we have devolved into this as a society. When we give our gifts, let us remember the reason for the giving – Jesus has conquered death, and that is our greatest victory.

The best way to celebrate Christmas is to receive the gift God has given to men (read John chapter one). This gift was God who became man, who died for our sin in our place. Everyone who repents of their sin and receives this gift will have everlasting life. This is true prosperity and the greatest prosperity, indeed.

ANOTHER WORD ABOUT GIFT GIVING:

Solomon and the queen of Sheba demonstrated the best template for gift exchanging: when visiting bring a gift from your wealth – gold, silver, costly spices, jewels and such. Your host, in turn displays his wealth and you choose what you will. It was noted in the account the queen of Sheba left with more than she brought. Visiting trumps hosting.

Christians and Referendum 71

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Today I want to talk to Christians about Referendum 71. Referendum 71 is the ballot measure that will allow voters to decide whether or not to give homosexual couples equivalent rights to married couples. I’m not going to talk to those that think gay marriage is the civil rights issue of today. Nor do I want to talk to those who are already committed to REJECT Referendum 71.

Instead, I want to talk to Christians who are inclined to vote to give marriage benefits to same-sex partners despite moral concerns about homosexuality. You know who you are.

You believe in grace, redemption, forgiveness and the need to love your neighbor as yourself. You believe that homosexuality is sin, but you have a hard time opposing homosexual rights measures because you feel it would be forcing people to abide by your personal moral code. You do not dislike gay people. In fact, you like your gay friends more than some Christians you know.

You are inclined to vote in favor of benefits for homosexuals simply to avoid association attitudes you have seen from fellow Christians. After all, you believe fervently in the command to love your neighbor.

However, you may fail to recognize the distinction between loving your neighbor and being liked. Many people make this mistake. In fact many believe the test of whether or not you love your neighbor is whether or not they like you. Therefore, in an effort to prove their love by being liked, they purge their lives of all controversy.

When a choice is to be made, they spend far more time pondering what other people are going to think than they do wondering whether or not it is right. Individuals will bite their tongue. Churches will avoid certain passages of scripture for decades at a time-all in the name of love.

The idea that Christians should try to be well liked is somewhat ironic when you consider the fact that Jesus was murdered. Moreover, He promised his disciples that they would be hated for obedience to him. (John 15:18; Matt 10:21-23). So where did we get the idea that being like Jesus means everybody is going to like us?

Christian charity is frequently looked upon favorably. Christian holiness, however, is not. Still, the goal for the Christian is not to be like or hated, political or apolitical, popular or unpopular. The goal is to be biblical.

Referendum 71 presents a dilemma for many Christians. They understand that God does not believe homosexual relationships are the equivalent of heterosexual marriages. They certainly don’t want their children being taught in school that they are morally the same. But is it kind if it will make someone angry?

It presents an even bigger dilemma for pastors. They have a tremendous opportunity for influence. But should they risk the potential fallout of addressing the biblical perspective on this issue?

While I have opinions, I cannot answer these questions for you. I will simply say that whatever decision is made, I hope it comes more from a desire to be faithful and less from a need to be liked.

Public Schools are Killing America

It is time for Christian families to get serious about pulling their kids out of Satan’s public schools.

The Misery I Have Been Spared

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins . . . But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ . . . And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved . . . For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. [Eph 2:1-10 NIV]

What God is telling us through the words of the Apostle Paul is that we all deserve to suffer death in Hell. But it is because of God’s great mercy, He chose to save some – the few -the undeserving. Though Scriptures tell us God is “not wanting anyone to perish” [2Pe 3:9 NIV], Jesus said broad is the way that leads to death and most will go there (Mat 7:13-14).

All mankind is full of evil (Jer 17:9). Every one of us deserves to die. No one seeks after God (Rom 3:11). But Christ died for all – He paid the price we could not pay to redeem our lives (Rom 5:6-8). Paul says God saved us when we were dead in our sins. Then, Paul says God has raised up the few to be seated with Him, in Christ Jesus, to display His incomparable grace.

That I should be saved at all is a demonstration of His incomparable grace. He saved me by grace alone, not by anything that I have done. He drew me to Him (Joh 6:44) to display His grace to the world and all the principalities. Because of what Christ has done, I am freed from the curse of sin – freed from the eternal death in Hell. What problem, what worry, what care in this life can compare to the misery I have been spared?

Therefore, my mind and my whole self should be focused on being His workmanship – doing what He prepared for me to do. Instead, I concern myself with my kingdom, which is burnable, when I should be working for His kingdom, which is eternal. Why am I consumed with the pettiness of this world?

To Create a god From Man

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

It was the medieval and ancient times that man regarded the king to be God, or a god. This was the foundation of the Greek myths. It was evidenced in the Bible in the account of Nimrod. The Bible does not go into details of the life of Nimrod, only to mention he was a mighty hunter and established at least eight major cities including Babylon and Ninevah. The secular accounts tell of his gruesome battles and victories and that he was considered to be a god. It was in this mindset that he set about to prevent the people from fulfilling their mandate from God to create urban sprawl and rounded them up to build the Tower of Babel to commemorate and celebrate the accomplishments of man.

King Herod and mere puppet for Caesar considered himself to be a god and did not silence the people when they worshiped him. The Bible tells us, in chapter twelve of Acts, when he accepted the praise of man and failed to give glory to God, he was struck down and immediately eaten by worms and died.

In America, the land of the free and home of the brave, we have become overrun by bureaucrats. Many of them believe themselves to be gods. In fact, they hold the power of God over a man’s life and business. Even many bureaucrats who profess to be Christian, have no fear of God but continue to build empires and despise their brothers’ freedoms.

God Will Bring His People

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men.
Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception.

May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue that says, “We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips — who is our master?”

“Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy,
I will now arise,” says the LORD. “I will protect them from those who malign them.”

And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times.

O LORD, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever.
The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men. [Psa 12:1-8 NIV]

When we look at our nation and the world today, it is easy to become discouraged. President Obama was elected to office on a whirlwind of praise from the media. After his first one-hundred days he can still do no wrong, regardless the appointments of those who favor to impose abortion and homosexuality upon our culture. He campaigned on the mantras of “Change” and “Hope” and what the people understood was that previous administrations had kept close strings on the public piggy bank and now he was going to open that piggy bank and disperse it back to the people it belonged to. What he did was stuff an empty vessel full of IOUs that even our grandchildren will be paying.

Our times mirror David’s observations: Everyone lies to his neighbor and refuses to acknowledge the truth. We have reclassified sin as a civil right, murder as a privacy issue and now we deceive ourselves that we can spend our way into prosperity. And the people believe we have found our messiah – the praises will never end and his blunders will be ignored. We hail the mantras of “Change” and “Hope” – our words and positive thoughts will make it so and we ignore the truth. On the pretense of relieving the poor, we will impoverish the masses and future generations.

Our leaders, bureaucrats and lawyers have worked hard to remove Jesus Christ from every inch of our culture. And the wicked have become emboldened to impose their perversions upon our children. But God tells us His word will stand. Even when it looks like evil is winning, we are not to become disheartened because God is still in control – and He is watching over us.

This week I was reading an article about the secularization of the Epsicopal Church USA. William Murchison, a longtime member, has written about this in his book, “Mortal Follies: Episcopalians and the Crisis of Mainline Christianity.” But he is not discouraged. He said, “I happen to think this is a wonderful time for evangelism. I’m too old, at 67, to be a pessimist; I’m more of an optimist. And I believe that God’s in charge — and he will take us through the trials of today, and he will bring his people where he wants them to be.”

God is still in control. No matter what is going on in your life – no matter what you see going on around you, God will bring you where He wants you to be. Amen.

If The LORD Delights In Us

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Another great commentary and admonition from David Crowe. http://restoreamerica.org/

On Sunday, November 2nd, 2008, just two days before the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States, I wrote,

“Tuesday, November 4th, will be a day of deliverance, either into captivity and lamentation, or into the recognition that our ordered liberties come from God; into the twilight before nightfall, or into the glorious light of day after the threat has passed; into an awakening and revival, or the awareness of great loss and evil to come.”

Can God’s people be counted on to stand up for truth?

A few nights ago Miss California chose to honor God, and take a stand for traditional marriage before a TV audience of millions. The truth – and her relationship with Christ – was more important to her than a temporal, earthly crown. It may have cost her a beauty contest, but in the minds and hearts of millions of Americans, she is ‘Miss USA’, no matter how the judges ruled.

A few days before, another woman – not as young or attractive – ignored the snickers, sneers and jeers of Britain’s pop culture, and courageously demonstrated it was worth pursuing her dream no matter what anyone else thought of her!

If America is to recover from the elevation of Godless secularism over the last 70 years, and the debilitating agenda of the current administration and out of control congress, Christians must do as Carrie Prejean and Susan Boyle did. If we do not, we will find ourselves consigned to an economic, moral, spiritual and political wilderness that one would never wish upon anyone, let alone their children.

That is the challenge to America’s Christians. Will we stand, or will we fold? Will we open our mouths, and speak truth, or will we continue to be intimidated by misguided policy makers, the self aggrandizing, the deceived, the intolerant, and the morally challenged? None of these are insurmountable giants to be left to guide public policy for their own pleasures and agendas, especially when America’s Christians stand shoulder to shoulder in the voting booth and town councils!

The eyes of faith. . . or the lens of fear

Bob Gass, in the April 21st “The Word for You Today” writes, “When you get right down to it, there’s very little difference in people, but the little difference amounts to a big difference, and the little difference is attitude; it determines whether you see life through the eyes of faith or the lens of fear.” When those around Joshua and Caleb “saw only giants and wanted to turn back”, Caleb said,

“If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us.” – Numbers 14:8

When God’s people seek His Face, turn from their wicked ways, and live courageously, confidently, and boldly to honor and glorify Him, He honors and blesses them. . . and heals their land! Cf. II Chronicles 7:14
Does our God ‘Delight in us’?

When we

* Shrink back from honoring Him openly, publicly, and courageously?
* VOTE for candidates for public office who openly defy God’s laws?
* Ignore our citizenship reponsibility to VOTE?
* Look the other way when we see evil being condoned?
* Choose to wait for the rapture instead of occupying until He comes?
* Refuse to speak truth in public meetings, forums, and legislatures?
* Remain silent when we should speak up and take action?
* Refuse to support and work for candidates who hold our values?
* Remove pastors from their pulpits who wish to speak openly and clearly into the culture?

Does He “Delight in us” when we do these things?
“There comes a time in the affairs of men when they must prepare to defend, not their homes alone, but the tenets of faith and humanity on which their churches, their governments, and their very civilization are founded.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt [ed - ironic, isn't it?]

That time has come, and it is imperative that we prepare NOW for the 2010 elections.

We Need God’s Help

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

by Franklin Graham

“The first quarter of 2009 is shaping up to be one of the most dismal financial performances since the early 1980s. If trends continue, things could get even worse. Unemployment is soaring , the stock market is sinking, and every economic indicator points to continued bad news.

Yet, even in the midst of some of the worst times I can remember, I haven’t seen one leading public figure in government or industry stand up and say that our country needs God’s help. Not one.

Perhaps this shouldn’t surprise us. for decades, our courts, politicians and educators have done everything they could to remove God from the public square. Our nation has ceased to acknowledge and worship God. We have arrogantly exalted ourselves, and we’ve come to believe we can fix every national ailment without God’s assistance.

Our current plight reminds me of the Prophet Jeremiah’s warning to Israel, a nation that was still enjoying relative prosperity but was on the brink of God’s judgement through the invasion of Babylonian forces.

Jeremiah issued the Lord’s stern rebuke: “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water (Jeremiah 2:13).

Their chief offense was that, in their comfort and ease, they had forgotten the God who had delivered them through the centuries, and instead relied on their own self-righteousness. They had forsaken the Source of all blessing and constructed a self-reliant society that was doomed to fail eventually.

That has a familiar ring, doesn’t it?

America was once a nation that honored and trusted God, albeit imperfectly. Many of today’s prestigious institutions of higher learning were founded by Christians, and precepts from Scripture were foundational for instruction. Presidents and national leaders embraced Christianity’s influence on civil matters, and God’s moral laws were encoded into our judicial system.

That godly heritage has been abandoned and rejected, and I believe we are paying the price today. Greed isn’t good. The lack of personal integrity has massive consequences. We’ve built a culture of our own making that is on the verge of destruction.

The answer is straightforward: “Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding” (Jeremiah 3:22). The biblical scenario for personal and national restoration is always the same – confession of sin, repentance and renewed obedience to the Lord and His ways.

This is a time of testing for our country. Will we acknowledge our sin and turn back to God? Will we call on God for help in our hour of distress, or will we continue to further distance ourselves from His aid?

God always leaves room for repentance. He is patient and long-suffering. But there comes a time when He finally allows us to reap what we’ve sown. That will be a bitter harvest, one that I pray we will not experience.

Now is the time for believers to call on the Lord, confess our sin and be cleansed. Now is the time for the church to be salt and light in a dark season. If we do, perhaps God will move in mercy and grace to heal our land.

“For I am merciful,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt (Jeremiah 3:12-13).”
