This is a reprint from Tandem Vincitur, February 1995:
The other day I received an anonymous letter. I can never understand why someone would send their opinions to anybody anonymously. If there is no name, there is no credibility. However, they enclosed a copy of a newspaper editorial by Andrew M Greeley and marked at the bottom, “You need to read this.” This was underlined. The photocopy did not credit any publication or date. The title of the opinion piece was “A Nation of Christians, or Hypocrites?” Andrew Greeley is a Roman Catholic priest, an author and a sociologist.
He began the column asserting the United States is not a Christian nation. He said this was not because more than 10 percent of the people are not Christian, nor was it due to the Supreme Court legislating a wall of separation. He premised that the unchristianness of this nation is due to the unchristian rhetoric of those who call in to radio talk shows.
He was especially upset about the “venomous hate” toward Susan Smith and Jeffrey Dahmer, “two unfortunate individuals.” He claims that the clear fundamental of Christianity was set forth by Jesus Christ when confronted with the woman caught in adultery. That fundamental is that only the one who is without sin may cast the first stone.
Then he made a bold declaration that the only one who knows “how personally guilty” these people are is God and “she does not phone into talk radio shows.” Therefore, if we claim to be followers of Jesus Christ, we should restrain our rage (no Scripture given). He ended his tirade against Christians claiming that the “personal assaults” against Hillary Clinton are more dangerous to our nation than the smut of NYPD Blue.
The first thing that came to mind was Hosea 4:7-8 (NIV): “The more the priests increased, the more they sinned against Me; they exchanged their Glory for something disgraceful. They feed on the sins of My people and relish their wickedness.” I hope the person who sent this news clipping to me doesn’t expect me to change my Biblical views based upon human logic. There is no credibility in any argument, from the pulpit or otherwise, which will ‘exchange their Glory for something disgraceful’ by placing a female pronoun upon God. Furthermore, this preacher called Jesus ‘the Founder’ as opposed to the Savior. This is paganism, pure and simple. So, too, are his arguments.
I listen very seldom to talk shows so I have heard nothing about Smith or Dahmer. I cannot explain any conversations, whether they were “venomous” or not. I do know this, the liberal left is at the end of their wits trying to defend their failed psychological relativistic culture. The only defense they have available is to attack anyone who will stand up for truth and justice as a “hate monger.”
Bill Clinton, in his “State of the Union” address attacked the generic masses as being “angry.” The news media asserts that the voters were “angry.” The elite can no longer defend themselves against truth and they are lashing out. It is their hope to intimidate you. Nobody likes to be falsely accused and that is their trump card – the only card they have left. So don’t be afraid, nor deceived.
As for this “clear fundamental of the Christian faith,” he has neglected the context of that situation. The Lord showed compassion upon a lost sinner and required of her that she leave her life of sin. That is a fundamental that has not yet sunk into most of the mainstream pulpits in North America.

PSA 145:8-13(NIV) “The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made. All You have made will praise You, O LORD; Your saints will extol You. They will tell of the glory of Your kingdom and speak of Your might, so that all men may know of Your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of Your kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made.”

I don’t listen to talk radio except sometimes when traveling. And, some folks who call in are angry. There is nothing wrong with being angry – - sometimes what we do when angry is very wrong. But, to demand decency from our elected officials is certainly not one of them.
God is merciful. But, just saying that ignores the clear message in the bible that he punishes sin of individuals and sometimes punishes countries. He has blessed our country richly – - so far. Let us pray that he won’t give up on America and allow us to be destroyed as he did Israel.
