Do We Need a New New Deal?

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Burton W. Folsom, Jr., Charles F. Kline Chair in History and Management, Hillsdale College
Author, New Deal or Raw Deal? How FDR’s Economic Legacy Has Damaged America

The following is adapted from a speech delivered on January 9, 2009, in Washington, D.C., at a seminar sponsored by Hillsdale’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship.

THE NEW Deal has probably been the greatest political force in America during the last 100 years, and Franklin D. Roosevelt has probably been the most influential president during this time. In our current economic crisis—which some have compared with the Great Depression—many critics are calling for more federal programs and a “New New Deal.” There are three reasons we do not need a New New Deal from President Obama in 2009.

First, the federal programs in FDR’s New Deal did not lower unemployment. Sure, the Works Progress Administration built roads, the Tennessee Valley Authority built dams, and the Civilian Conservation Corps planted trees. But every dollar that went to creating a federal job had to come from taxpayers, who, by sending their cash to Washington, lost the chance to buy hamburgers, movie tickets, or clothes and create new jobs for restaurants, theaters, and tailors.

Do Conservatives Need to Get Beyond Reagan?

Friday, February 13th, 2009

The following is adapted from a speech delivered by Rush Limbaugh on December 4, 2008, at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., on the occasion of the ninth annual Hillsdale College Churchill Dinner.

THERE ARE ongoing discussions and debates among conservatives about the kind of president Barack Obama will prove to be, and about how they should react to him. But there is a larger and more important debate going on within conservatism—a debate about what conservatism is. Remarkably, we are hearing from a lot of people who are thought to be conservatives that conservatives need to “get beyond Reagan.” After all, these people say, “The Reagan era is over.” And the liberal media love to print their articles and broadcast their pronouncements to this effect. My response is, well, yes, the Reagan era is over in the sense that it has been 20 years since Reagan was president. But the funny thing is, I never heard the liberals saying that because the era of FDR was over-it ended in 1945-that they needed to “get beyond FDR.” They didn’t say that 35 years later when Reagan was first elected, or when he was reelected in 1984. They didn’t say that when the liberals lost Congress in the 1994 election. Nor did they say it after the 2000 or 2004 elections. Instead, they kept arguing and fighting for the ideas they believe in. And now Mr. Obama is plausibly promising to revive the era of FDR.

Hyundai Is NOT Panicked by the Economy

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Hyundai believes – and they are not panicking by this downturn in the economy. In fact, they are willing to guarantee if your economy declines, you may return the car with no impact on your credit. It is good to see some cool heads, even while the new president and the media are screaming the sky is falling.

How Bad Is The Economy?

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Yesterday, I wrote an article about our economy for the readers at our store website (UniqueMotif.com). Today, I thought I should post it at cominus, also. Here is the text:

Everywhere we go, it seems people want to talk about how bad the economy is. The news harps on it so much that people get the impression it is worse than it is. We have even had a few people that have come into the store and want to talk about the economy – and I am always willing to give them my opinion of the matter. But that does not seem to sway them, even though they still have a job. They usually end the conversation with something like, “I really like your store; I hope you make it.” Ironically, these people never buy anything!

It surprises me when business people seem to be convinced the economy is bleak. Why would anyone want to be in business if it was a worthless cause, or if all their efforts were destined for futility? I heard Dan Kennedy say something like, “there is no good economy and no bad economy – only your economy.” This is so true. The macro-economy of our entire nation boils down to the micro-economy of each individual. If we are a nation of individual industry, we will be a nation of industry – and our economy will be what we make of it.

The news paints a bleak picture and at the time of this writing, unemployment hovers in the mid sevens. If you recall the seventies and early eighties, when interest was in the double digits, unemployment was also in the double digits. President Carter devised a formula that he called the misery factor. We are not there yet. The Great Depression hosted twenty-five to thirty-eight percent unemployment. We are far from there. In fact, today, ninety-two and a half percent of the working people are still working. You won’t hear that on the news.

Another thing you will not hear on the news is during the month of December – remember that is the month with “record breaking” layoffs and such – wages and benefits were up point seven percent. Also, in December, consumer costs were down point seven percent! Amid all this bad news, the consumer – that’s you and me – had a net gain of one point seven percent. You won’t hear that on the news, either but you will find it on the website of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

One recent morning a national newscaster was talking about unemployment and said she did not know who would be hit next and that no job is safe. Then she began crying as she told us we don’t know how low this will go. The radio stations usually repeat the national news over-and-over all day long but this was a little over the top and I did not hear it again. A couple days later, this same gal told us the unemployment numbers were looking better this week. Then she said, “but let me tell you why this is not good news.”

Another tactic the news media has incorporated to exaggerate the bad news is listing all the global layoffs by global companies and giving us the impression these are American jobs when only a fraction are. For some reason, the news media is concentrating on bad news and trying to make things worse than they really are.

For anyone out there on unemployment, I hate to say this – and please do not take it personal, but please hear me out: One of the problems we have is unemployment compensation – people depend upon it. First, they depend upon their job and then they depend upon unemployment compensation if the job fails. This safety net is the mindset and few become creative until the benefits start running out.

What would most these people be doing if there was no safety net to rely upon? I don’t advocate removing unemployment compensation entirely but I do advocate removing our reliance upon it. There was a time we did not have this – and we somehow managed to get by. One thing the news does not tell you is how many of these unemployed people transition into new careers and/or start their own businesses. People – that’s you and me, again – will get creative when they have to.

Probably one of the reasons for this safety-net reliance is the government run schools teach us to get a job – that may or may not be without a degree – instead of teaching us how to get skills and how to think creatively. What did we ever do before we had jobs?

The economy of the United States of America, rough as it is right now, is the soundest in the world and it holds the most promise – even if our politicians botch it up by trying to help us out. The people of America are creative and when push comes to shove, they will pull their boots on and get to work – on something.

Another thing that gives our nation stability and promise is our faith in God. The media would have you think there are few left who actually believe in God but the fact of the matter is most the people in our great nation still do believe in God Almighty and they pray to Him. I believe in the power of prayer and I believe God hears us. I believe He provides for the sparrow and He will provide for us.

Keep looking up – have faith in God. He will provide for your every need – even if the news media has you scared half to death.

A Call To Prayer

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

This is from David Crowe, RestoreAmerica.org. He speaks after my own heart.

“So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed and said, “Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His Covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, we have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly, and rebelled, even turning aside from Thy commandments and ordinances.” – Daniel 9:3-5

Abba Father, all knowing, all wise, patient beyond comprehension, forgive us for turning aside from you as a people and as a nation. We are so easily and unwittingly given to love the world and things of the world, even as we profess to love You. Draw us again to be attentive to the words of the prophets lest we perish foolishly, needlessly, consumed with the trinkets, pursuits and pleasures of those who are lost and overtaken by their sin. Awaken in us dear LORD, a hunger to seek you anew and afresh; to examine our lives in quietness; to come before You in spirit and truth and listen to what you would speak to us. Come tenderly to us in those moments dear LORD. Speak in the quietness, as we confess our sin, our rebellion, and daily willfulness. Shine the light of your loving kindness upon us as we come to you in brokenness, hungry for your voice, your love, and fatherly counsel. May we hear afresh and anew, and heed what you say to us, in humility and determination to walk a different path. May we not ‘try harder’ but instead yield more completely to the only One who can give us meaning, joy, and hope in the midst of this fallen, hopeless world. We love You and need You every day and every moment of our day. May we turn away from our sin and willfulness. Walk with us dearest LORD. Speak tenderly to your children, as we walk with You anew and afresh, with courage and confidence. . . In our Savior’s Name, the only Name under heaven whereby we must be saved, Jesus of Nazareth. Amen

Please continue to pray that . . .
• Christians will not fear man, but honor and exalt the Prince of Peace at all times and in all places, with confidence and boldness
• We will proclaim the knowledge of salvation, the forgiveness of sins, and God’s tender mercies at home, in the workplace, in our schools, and at ‘the gates’
• We will walk in the light as He is in the light, with courage, conviction, boldness, and grace
• He will guide our thoughts, our words, and our feet, in truth, as citizens
• Christians throughout America will fulfill their ’salt and light’ citizenship responsibility in restoring the nation “Under God”
• Our Christian leaders will call the nation to prayer, cry out as never before in repentance, and courageously shepherd their people in the power of the Holy Spirt
• Our pulpits would again be ‘on fire for righteousness’
• Our pastors and the people would once again call our elected officials to respect eternal truth to the glory of God and the blessing of mankind
• God’s people will repent of their worldliness, self absorption, apathy and indifference to the Word of God and their citizenship responsibility
• Christians across the nation will pray for this President, his advisors, his cabinet, and our elected officials in both Houses of Congress
• Elected and unelected officials will be prevented from doing evil, ignoring eternal principles, and remaining in office if they implement laws destructive to human life, marriage, the family, and the exercise of our God given freedoms of speech, conscience, and the pursuit of happiness
• Israel will prevail in her righteous cause and that the God of Heaven will protect and preserve her until the Day of Jesus Christ
• We, His people, will believe once again that He “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works within us” (Ephesians 3:20)
